Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue (s) Playlist – Part Two

Play One More Tom Russell

Playlist Part 2  – Something Borrowed, Something Blue(s)

Starts with Something Borrowed – Tom Russell –  Play One More:The Songs of Ian & Sylvia

Yesterday, I posted the first half of my Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue (s)Playlist. You can read about it here. The second half of my playlist starts with “Something Borrowed”. What was borrowed were the songs that comprise the latest release from.Tom Russell. Russell borrowed twelve songs from Ian and Sylvia Tyson for an album aptly titled Play One More: The Songs  of Ian and Sylvia. According to his website…..

Tom has been thinking about this record for twenty years and now it’s coming! There are 12 songs plus two previously un-issued demos sung by Ian and Sylvia: “The French Girl,” and “Grey Morning”

The Tracks Tom has recorded with Cindy Church and Grant Siemens include: “Wild Geese,” Rio Grande,” “Play One More,” “Red Velvet,” “These Friends of Mine,” “The Renegade,” and many surprises! Including two co-writes with Ian and Sylvia and Tom that TR has never recorded.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Ian & Sylvia they were a Canadian folk duo of the 60s and 70s  They are best remembered for their songs “Four Strong Winds” and “Someday Soon” penned by Ian Tyson and “You Were On My Mind” written by Sylvia. As well as, their covers of Gordon Lightfoot’s  “Early Morning Rain” and  Joni Mitchell‘s “Circle Game”

I confess that I was never a big fan of Ian & Sylvia, but Tom Russell’s cover of these songs may change all that . This is a very nice collection of songs and Tom does a great job on each song. My current favorites include : “Wild Geese’ and ‘Rio Grande”.  Other songs I like include the title track ‘Play One More”, “Sam Bonnifield’s Saloon, and “Red Velvet”.  Hmm , that one may be up with those favorites.

Anyway Check it Out!

Something Blue (s) – Hard Truth – Coco Montoya

Hard Truth - Coco MontoyaThe something blue that completes the playlist is the blues album that has spent the most time in my music rotation over the last several weeks  Hard Truth from Coco Montoya. This is one damn good album! Duh and the proof is in the pudding, as the album was number one on the Roots Music Blues Chart last week and 5 this week!!

My first musical encounters with Coco Montoya was when he was playing lead guitar with John Mayall And the Bluesbreakers in the 1980s. Since then a couple of his albums have caught my attention. His 1997 release Just Let Go is in my music library.

For me though Hard Truth may be his best album yet or at least my favorite. I don’t think that there is really a bad track on this album. Throughout the album, both Montoya’s guitar and vocals are outstanding.

My favorite tracks include “Before the Bullets Fly”, “I Want.to Shout About It.”, “Old Habits are Hard to Break”. So I added these three tracks to the playlist. Here is the completed first Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue Playlist….
