So over the last few days I have listened to something completely different a one-woman black metal project – Myrkur. I usually avoid any band labeled black metal or death metal, I just don’t like the distorted songs or the vocals. However, this album is, I think, not your typical black metal music I fact in the band’s biography at Relapse Records it says…..
….Shrouded in darkness and mystic elegance…this is black metal unlike anything that has been heard before.
Evidently Myrkur’s music combines “the rawness of second wave black metal bands like Ulver and Darkthrone with a natural sonic, ethereal beauty.” It was the ethereal and angelic vocals that caught my attention on the opening track and made the rest of the album a sonic adventure for me!! Myrkur says this about the relationship of her music, nature and black metal…..
“Nature is a big part of the reason black metal even exists. And all types of pure music that comes from a pure place. The word ‘Myrkur’ means ‘darkness’ in Icelandic. The place where there are no boundaries, where no one can hurt me. And when I have sung the screams it, physically hurts but it feels like something is leaving my body. I can’t remember it afterwards.”
Count Oculus, who runs Why Gang Records and hails from London, Ontario says this about Myrkur’s music….
Absolutely beautiful. Textured with vocals of a fallen angel and accompanied by the sounds of nature’s wrath. Huge inspiration to me right now.
So check out this well, sonically mesmerizing album!!
