2013 Folk from Tim Grimm – The Turning Point

Tim GrimmI discovered Tim Grimm’s music almost three years ago through a chance encountered on XM Radio, that’s ten years after he was named 2000’s “BEST DISCOVERY in Roots/Americana Music” by The Chicago Sun-Times, six years after he was named “2004 MALE ARTIST of The Year” by the Freeform American Roots DJs, and four years after his album  The Back Fields was named Best Americana Album in the 2006 Just Plain Folks Music Awards in Los Angeles (the largest and most diverse music awards in the world). What took me so long!! The answer is a simple I don’t know!! Anyway, I/’m glad I know about him now and I The Turning Pointthought I’d tell you readers to – CHECK HIM OUT!

Last night, while I was finishing Cut to the Bone the latest Body Farm novel from Jefferson Bass, I also was listening to Tim’s latest release The Turning Point, (Hey, I’m only four months behind on this one! the album was released in September of 2013) Like its predecessors the album is….

full of the rural rumblings that have shaped his life—rich with descriptive details, and sung with warmth and intimacy—recognizing the inextinguishable national romance with the idea of the family farm and the vanishing landscape of rural America.

In 2007 Tim created the concept CD Wilderness Plots featuring several of the Midwest’s finest songwriter’s— Krista Detor, Carrie Newcomer, Tom Roznowski, and Michael White….

….The recording, Wilderness Plots, was drawn from the short stories of noted author, Scott Russell Sanders, and explored the settling of the American Wilderness in the Ohio River Valley Region between The Revolutionary War and The Civil War. Two PBS programs have explored Wilderness Plots– the first, a documentary on the story and song, and the second a full Wilderness Plots- In Concert (2012). Produced by WTIU in Bloomington, IN, both productions were nominated for EMMY AWARDS.

In 2011 he released a tribute album to fellow songwriter and his hero and mine, Tom Paxton apply titled Thank You Tom Paxton! In i]the album  covered many of my favorites including . Whose Garden Was ThisMy Favorite SpringForest Lawn and  even the less well known General Custer. The songs all fit Tim perfectly!!

Tim is also an actor who has appeared with Harrison Ford in the film Clear and Present Danger His  most recent projects include guest spots on television’s, CHICAGO CODE and DETROIT 187, and work on the upcoming feature film, AT ANY PRICE,  with director, Ramin Bahrani and starring Dennis Quaid and Zac Effron. In 2012 he has  appeared onstage in The Indiana Repertory Theatre production of GOD OF CARNAGE and a new theatrical concert piece– FOREVER SUNG- songs about aging–at The Phoenix Theatre.

Now, since I was multitasking last night, I didn’t catch all the words to all the songs, but from what I did catch his songwriting skills are only getting better!! With a few more listens I know this will be a favorite album!! So like I said check it out!! From

“The Turning Point’, features a bunch of wonderful guests, including Harpeth Rising, Cindy Kallet, Beth Lodge-Rigal, Jason Wilber (John Prine’s sidekick for many years), Jan Lucas, Connor Grimm and newgrass band, The Underhills. One of the many highlights on the album is ‘Anne of Amsterdam’ in which Grimm describes in words and music his thoughts and emotions after visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

Here are Tim and his wife Jan Lucas perform “Anne in Amsterdam” from The Turning Point, recorded in Lage Vuursche, the Netherlands, In The Woods

and here they are performing the song “So it Goes” included on Tim’s album Farm Songs. Just a great song couldn’t pass it up!!!
