New Folk – Next Time Around from Darryl Purpose

Next Time AroundMy musical day today started with a mix of folk music from the iPod, first there was a song from Jesse Winchester’s Gentleman of Leisure album and then a Mark Erelli song, a track from Les Sampou, I haven’t heard her voice in a while!  As my thoughts rambled through the list of musicians whose music could come on next, they landed on Darryl Purpose, whose music I’ve loved since around 2000. I thought about his latest album, his first album of new material since 2003. In 2005 he set down his guitar shut down his music making and according to his website he…

took a 7 year sabbatical in the rocky mountains. During this time he shepherded the release of “Singer-Songwriter Heaven, the songs of Kevin Faherty” and continued to co-captain the Second Strings Project, which is responsible for delivering over twenty thousand sets of guitar strings to those who need them all around the world…. He says that he also “got healthy, in multiple ways”

Darryl Purpose2Last year he released a new album titled – “Next Time Around”, produced by Billy Crockett for the Blue Rock Artists label and it’s a great one. Over the last month or so it’s been Number 1 on the Roots Music Chart!  Here’s some press for the album:

“It’s been a long time since I put a new record in my CD player and listened repeatedly for days.”
-Robin Pressman, ‘Our Roots Are Showing’ KRCBfm

“Once in a great while an artists work shows up in my life and stands me on my ear. Darryl’s singing and writing have unmistakably advanced to another level.” -Louise Taylor, Recording Artist

“‘Next Time Around’ is the gold standard of modern American folk” -Nancy Dunham, Folking.Com

I couldn’t agree more that this is probably his best album yet, there are so many great songs and Darryl’s vocals have never been better! I love “Orange Raincoat”, “Dreams of Life”,and “The Fourth Chair”. The one song that’s stood out from my first listen is “Girl From Golden Colorado”, oh, now about “Ghost of Crazy Horse, hell, they’re all good!! So Check it out!!
