While out doing errands this morning, I listened to the second bluegrass band I’ve listened to recently, Milkdrive. The album that I listened to is Road From Home. Milkdrive is a contemporary jazz-grass band featuring award-winning instrumentalists Brian Beken on fiddle and lead vocals, Noah Jeffries on guitar and harmony vocals, Dennis Ludiker on mandolin and harmony vocals, and Matt Mefford on double bass. Dennis Ludiker, Brian Beken and Noah Jeffries met as youngsters competing in the National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest in Weiser, Idaho. A few years later they moved to Austin and met bassist Matt Mefford and Milkdrive was formed. The Road From Home features a mix of ballads, including the opening murder ballad “Dry Creek Inn”, with jazzy-bluegrass instrumentals, bet you can’t guess what I like! Reviewer Graham Robertson says that the mix results in “achieving a rootsy feel with a sophisticated edge,” and gives the band: “A fantastic canvas for solo work.” Andrew Dansby of the Houston Chronicle calls the MilkDrive repertoire “a virtuosic blast of bluegrassy string-band music.” . Hey, all I know is that there’s some fancy pickin’ going on that I like, coupled with some well written songs!! So check them out at all the usual places including their Reverbnation page. As for me, I can’t wait to check out the new album Waves. Here’s the opening track “Dry Creek Inn” from the Road from Home from an IBMA showcase!
